APA Group Hits Major Milestone at Port Hedland Solar FarmAPA Group, one of Australia’s leading energy infrastructure companies, has achieved a significant milestone by completing the installation of all solar panels at its 45MW Port Hedland Solar Farm. This solar farm will be paired with a powerful 35MW/36.7MWh battery energy storage system, designed to provide renewable energy to mining giants in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Acquisition Fuels Expansion
APA’s involvement in the project follows its 2023 acquisition of local energy network, generation, and storage assets from Alinta. This move solidified APA’s position in the renewable energy market, allowing them to take over the development of the Port Hedland Solar Farm and Battery project. The addition of this solar and battery system will support existing operations at the Port Hedland Power Station (PHPS), now also owned and operated by APA.
Powering BHP’s Daytime Operations
The project is expected to provide renewable energy to one of Australia’s largest mining companies, BHP. In 2022, BHP signed an agreement with Alinta to use the solar power generated by the Port Hedland project for its daytime operations at the Port Hedland site. APA seamlessly continued this partnership after its acquisition of the project.
On Track for Completion
With the recent solar panel installation handled by project partners Monford Group and Shanghai Electric Group, the development is on schedule. The solar farm is expected to begin operations later this year, providing sustainable energy solutions to meet the needs of the Pilbara region’s energy-intensive mining sector.
