The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing $2 million to help three local councils in Victoria’s west transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This funding will support the Local Council BEV Integration Project, which aims to deploy 65 light and 7 heavy battery electric vehicles (BEVs) along with the necessary charging infrastructure.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasized that the collaboration between councils—Wyndham, Moonee Valley, and Brimbank—will demonstrate how local governments can lead in decarbonizing transportation. The project, valued at $8.9 million, will focus on fleet electrification for waste management, parks maintenance, and general travel, supporting Australia’s net zero targets.

Overcoming Challenges

The project will also address challenges like technical issues, cost management, and infrastructure needs. It will serve as a model for wider adoption of EV fleets, providing insights for overcoming barriers in fleet electrification.

Set to run through June 2027, the project aligns with the Australian Government’s Driving the Nation Fund, which allocated $500 million for cleaner, more affordable transport solutions.
