A massive step forward has been made in Australia’s offshore wind journey — Iberdrola Australia has received regulatory approval to begin site investigations for its ambitious 3GW Aurora Offshore Wind Project, located off the coast of Victoria.

⚓ Regulatory Green Light:The Offshore Infrastructure Regulator (ORI) has given the go-ahead for Iberdrola to conduct metocean and wind studies, marking a critical milestone for the project.
📊 The investigation will use:
Floating LiDAR buoys
Wave buoys
Sea frames…to gather data on wind, currents, wave activity, water levels, and more — all essential to designing the offshore wind farm.
🌬️ What’s Planned:
📍 Location: 25–50 km offshore from Gippsland, Victoria
🔋 Capacity: 150 turbines, total 3GW
🎯 First 1GW operational by 2032 (pending further permits)
🗺️ Feasibility & Auction Pathway:
Iberdrola is among 11 developers awarded a feasibility licence by the Victorian government to explore offshore wind potential for up to seven years.
📅 Coming Up:Victoria will launch Australia’s first offshore wind auction in September 2025, aiming to reach 9GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040. Projects awarded will likely receive Contracts for Difference (CfDs) — offering fixed electricity prices to protect against
market volatility.
💡 Global precedent shows CfDs have been crucial to scaling offshore wind, but also come with risks, as shown by Orsted’s cancellation of a major UK wind farm even with CfD support.
