Australia’s energy storage race has hit a new milestone. The Collie Battery in WA – now the country’s largest – is officially commissioned and fully operational. At 560 MW / 2,240 MWh, it’s the first in Australia to cross the two gigawatt-hour threshold, and it’s already reshaping how rooftop solar is stored and used.

Australia Commissions First 2 GWh Battery to Soak Up Rooftop Solar

Why the Collie Battery Matters

  • Massive Scale → 17x bigger than the original Hornsdale Tesla battery.

  • Grid Impact → Already meeting up to 18% of evening demand.

  • Solar Soaker Role → Absorbing excess rooftop solar in the day, discharging at peak evening hours.

  • Fast Commissioning → Stage 2 finished in just 4 months, far quicker than rivals.

A New Era of Big Batteries

Collie won’t be alone for long. More 2 GWh+ batteries are on the way:

  • Eraring (NSW) – 700 MW / 2,800 MWh by 2027.

  • Richmond Valley (NSW) – 275 MW / 2,200 MWh, Australia’s biggest 8-hour battery.

  • Tomago (NSW) & Reeves Plains (SA) – Both at 500 MW / 2,000 MWh.

Together, these projects will flatten the “solar duck curve”, reduce grid stress, and accelerate the coal exit.

Western Australia Leading the Way

WA’s isolated grid is now a global testbed for large-scale batteries:

  • Collie Stages 1 & 2 already stabilising demand.

  • Synergy battery set to join within months.

  • WA projected to host 3 GW / 11 GWh of battery capacity by 2029, replacing coal.
