Legislation Passes for Net Zero Authority

On 9 September 2024, the Net Zero Economy Authority was officially legislated, marking a significant step in Australia’s commitment to transitioning toward a low-carbon economy. The new authority is set to play a crucial role in reducing emissions at scale, ensuring that industries, communities, and workers are supported in this transition.

A Global Signal of Australia’s Net Zero Commitment

Anna Skarbek, CEO of Climateworks Centre and Advisory Board Member of the Net Zero Economy Agency, welcomed the establishment of the authority. She emphasized that the legislation sends a strong message both domestically and internationally about Australia’s dedication to seizing the opportunities of a net zero economy. "This authority will accelerate emission reductions while ensuring a fair and orderly transformation," Skarbek noted.

Targeting Industrial Regions to Cut Emissions

Skarbek highlighted the need for a focused approach, revealing that five industrial regions account for one-eighth of Australia’s total emissions. The Net Zero Economy Authority will target these areas, working to keep industries and communities competitive in a decarbonized global market. "The authority can ensure these industrial heartlands continue to thrive in a clean energy future," she said.

The Authority’s Three Key Responsibilities

The Net Zero Economy Authority will have a threefold mission:

1. Supporting Workers: Helping workers in emissions-intensive sectors transition to new jobs and gain new skills.

2. Regional and Community Development:Coordinating policies to help regions and communities attract clean energy industries.

3. Attracting Investment: Assisting investors and companies in seizing opportunities in the net zero transformation.

Australia Joins Global Efforts

With major global economies already implementing their transition strategies, Skarbek emphasized that planning for a net zero economy is becoming the “new normal.” "This legislation confirms that Australia is ready to join the ranks of nations making the most of these economic opportunities," she added.
