Local Choice, Bigger Reward

Victorian families have a fresh reason to support homegrown products—especially when it comes to cutting energy bills. From 1 July 2025, the Victorian Government is offering an extra $400 rebate for households that install Australian-made hot water systems, bringing the total rebate up to $1400. This initiative not only lowers upfront costs but also backs local jobs in the manufacturing sector.

Powering Up with State Support

The extra rebate is part of a $29.7 million boost from the 2025–26 state budget. It supports more households to switch to electric appliances that are cleaner and cheaper to run. Even if households choose a non-Australian made system, they’ll still be eligible for the standard $1000 rebate under the program.

Why Heat Pumps Matter

Heating water takes up a big chunk—around 30%—of a household's energy use. That’s why switching to a heat pump hot water system can save you around $330 annually. These systems are not only energy-efficient but have become the most popular upgrade under Victoria’s Solar Homes Program, which saw a 151% jump in installations from last year.

Freedom to Choose + Support for Local Jobs

The government’s approach still gives consumers the freedom to choose the system that works best for their home. But for those who opt for locally made products, there’s now an extra reward. Consultations with manufacturers and unions are already underway to set fair standards and ensure transparency in what counts as “Australian made.”

Solar Victoria's Impact So Far

Since launching in 2018, the Solar Victoria program has approved over 400,000 rebates and loans, including more than 310,000 rooftop solar systems—generating a massive 2.3GW of clean energy. The new hot water system rebate is simply the latest step in helping households go electric while supporting a booming $39.2 billion Victorian manufacturing sector.

Government’s Clear Message

Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio summed it up:

> “We want Victorians to save money and support local jobs. There’s a long history of locally made hot water systems, and this policy helps make sure that tradition continues to benefit families and workers right here in our state.”
