The Project Behind the Controversy

At the heart of this intense debate is the Narrabri Coal Seam Gas Project, operated by energy giant Santos. While the project received initial government approval back in 2020, it remains a flashpoint for environmental and agricultural advocates in 2026.

The master plan includes:

850 coal seam gas wells carved into the Pilliga Forest over a 20-year lifespan.
The 55km Narrabri Lateral Pipeline, designed to connect the gas fields to the larger east-coast network.
The Queensland–Hunter Pipeline, transporting the extracted gas straight through the Hunter Valley to Newcastle.

Despite years of pushing, the project cannot operate at a profitable, commercial scale without these pipelines—and Santos is still holding off on a Final Investment Decision (FID) as community pushback intensifies.

The 2026 Energy Reality: Gas Supply vs. Climate Targets

Supporters of the pipeline, including several state officials, argue that Narrabri gas is critical for stabilising the grid and supporting heavy manufacturing. They claim the project could supply up to half of NSW’s gas demand.

However, the latest 2026 data paints a different picture. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) recently highlighted in its Draft 2026 Integrated System Plan that while some flexible gas is needed for backup, the future grid requires a massive 120 GW of grid-scale wind and solar and 32 GW of battery storage.

Furthermore, financial think tanks like IEEFA warn that the Narrabri project will not deliver the cheap energy promised. Extracting this specific gas is expensive, risks locking in high carbon emissions, and does very little to lower domestic power bills compared to scaling up cheaper renewables.
