HumeLink, a $4.89 billion transmission project by Transgrid, has received its final approvals from New South Wales and Federal governments. With this milestone, Transgrid’s Board has officially committed to the project, setting construction to begin in early 2025.

HumeLink Transmission Project Gets Final Approval
Economic Benefits for Consumers and Communities

HumeLink is projected to deliver over $1 billion in net benefits for Australian energy consumers. The project will also create significant opportunities for suppliers, regional businesses, and national-level jobs, strengthening the local economy while advancing Australia’s energy transition.

Key Investments and Support

Transgrid Group CEO, Brett Redman, announced a $1.5 billion investment from security holders for HumeLink, following a $690 million investment earlier in 2024 for the VNI West project. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) has also committed $450 million in concessional-loan financing for HumeLink and an additional $1 billion through subordinated notes.

The CEFC’s ongoing support includes $140 million in funding for Transgrid’s VNI West interconnector project, further emphasizing the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure.

Construction Timeline and Renewable Energy Benefits

With detailed design and preparations underway, the main construction of HumeLink will start in early 2025 and is slated for completion by late 2027. Once operational, the project will reinforce the Southern New South Wales electricity grid, integrating new renewable energy sources.

HumeLink and VNI West are pivotal to achieving Australia’s energy transition, supporting national and state net-zero targets, and providing consumers with access to more affordable renewable energy.

Commitment to Local Communities

Mr. Redman emphasized the crucial role of local communities in the project’s planning and delivery. Transgrid will prioritize local employment, training, and skills development while investing over $11 million in community programs to ensure lasting social and economic benefits.

“Our aim has always been to balance community needs and benefits with the long-term interests of energy consumers,” Mr. Redman said. This includes ensuring minimal environmental and social impacts while delivering cost-effective renewable energy solutions.
