Massive Green Light for Renewable Energy
In a groundbreaking move, New South Wales has granted grid access to ten major renewable energy and storage projects totaling over 7 GW. These projects—approved under the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ)—are intended to replace retiring coal assets and will collectively power up to 2.7 million homes annually.
Big Winners and Major Players
Among the winners are heavyweight developers like Andrew Forrest’s Squadron

Energy, Tilt Renewables, ACEN Renewables, Lightsource bp, and Pacific Partnerships. Notably, three Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) winners—Acen’s 919 MW Valley of the Winds, Squadron’s 700 MW Spicers Creek wind farm, and Lightsource bp’s Sandy Creek solar and battery hybrid—secured grid access.
Record-Breaking Renewable Integration
This allocation features Australia's largest hybrid solar project to date: Potentia's Tallawang Solar Hybrid with 500 MW of solar and 1,000 MWh of storage. The combined 7.15 GW generation and 5.2 GWh storage capacity will nearly double NSW’s current large-scale wind and solar output.
Billions in Investment and Job Creation
NSW Energy Minister Penny Sharpe hailed the move as unlocking billions in private investment while lowering energy bills and boosting reliability. The REZ is projected to generate thousands of jobs and support community initiatives, especially in Dubbo and Dunedoo.
Grid Shift and Regional Pushback
While the REZ program is transforming NSW’s energy landscape, it’s not without opposition. Some regional communities are uneasy about hosting most of the new infrastructure. Meanwhile, local network providers argue they could integrate capacity faster and more cost-effectively than new transmission lines.
Australia’s Clean Energy Future Accelerates
The REZ initiative showcases how swiftly Australia is moving toward renewables. With 10 GW added through this and the South West REZ, NSW is set to lead in clean energy innovation, job creation, and emissions reduction.
