Conditional Approval Secured for Birriwa Solar Farm
The Birriwa Solar Farm, part of the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (CWO REZ), has been conditionally approved by the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission.
Location and Project Details
Situated approximately 15km southeast of Dunedoo, the Birriwa Solar Farm will feature a 600MW solar farm, a 600MW/1200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), and on-site accommodation. This project will generate enough renewable energy to power over 229,000 homes.
Comprehensive Government Assessment
In May 2024, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure conducted a thorough assessment of the solar farm. Given that more than 50 public submissions and the Warrumbungle Shire Council objected to the development, the Commission served as the consent authority.
Community Engagement and Decision
The three-member commission panel—Janett Milligan (Chair), Suellen Fitzgerald, and Duncan Marshall—engaged with stakeholders, conducted a site inspection, held a public meeting, and reviewed 65 community submissions before granting development consent with conditions.
Strategic Planning Alignment
The Commission's Statement of Reasons noted that the site aligns with the strategic planning framework, contributing to New South Wales’ renewable energy goals within an established REZ.
