Queensland’s LNP government has cancelled the 1.2 GW Forest Wind project, repealing a law that made it possible. Critics are calling it an “act of bastardry”, accusing the state of turning its back on renewables while doubling down on coal.

What Happened ❌
📍 Forest Wind was planned for the Tuan-Toolara pine plantation.
⚡ It could have powered hundreds of thousands of homes.
📝 The project had approval since 2020 but was awaiting federal clearance.
🪓 Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie repealed the Act that allowed plantation-based wind farms.
Why It Was Cancelled
Bleijie pointed to:
Developer Tilt Renewables exiting in 2024.
“Widespread” community concerns (disputed by the developer).
Lack of progress despite approvals.
But the project team argues:
✅ Environmental impact was minimal.
✅ Hundreds of local businesses supported it.
✅ Landowners had already signed agreements.
Backlash from Green Groups 🌱
Queensland Conservation Council called the move an “act of bastardry.”
Smart Energy Council asked: “If not in plantations, then where can wind farms go?”
Experts warn this kills investor confidence and risks higher power bills.
The Bigger Picture 🏭
This is the second wind farm scrapped after the $1B Moonlight Range project. At the same time, the government is:
Expanding coal mining in the Galilee Basin.
Giving companies like Adani (Barvus) a royalty holiday.
Aligning with coal giants like Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer.
Queensland risks becoming coal country again, just as the world shifts to cleaner energy.
