Imagine a vast mine, once a hub of coal production, being transformed into a beacon of clean energy. This is the exciting vision behind the Stratford Renewable Energy Hub (SREH), a project proposed by Yancoal Australia, Australia's largest coal miner.
The SREH is a plan to breathe new life into the retiring Stratford coal mine located in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Instead of digging for coal, the mine will be transformed into a renewable energy powerhouse. The key players in this transformation are:
Solar Farm: A massive solar farm with a capacity of 330MW will be built on the mine site. This solar farm will harness the sun's energy and convert it into electricity.
Pumped Hydro Storage: This innovative technology will store energy using water. Imagine two reservoirs, one at a higher elevation and one at a lower elevation. During the day, excess solar energy will be used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir. When clean energy is needed, the water will be released back down to the lower reservoir, generating electricity through turbines. This pumped hydro storage system will have a capacity of 3.6 GWh and can provide a whopping 300MW of power for 12 hours straight!
Benefits for Everyone
The SREH is a win-win for everyone involved. Here's how it will benefit different groups:
