South Australia Joins Denmark in Leading Renewable Energy Integration

South Australia has entered an exclusive global club, alongside Denmark, as one of the few regions managing significant volumes of surplus renewable energy, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The state has achieved Phase 5 on the IEA's scale, indicating that solar and wind power now surpass fossil fuels for much of the year, with renewable energy sometimes exceeding 100% of local demand.

In 2023, South Australia reached this level by generating at least 70% of its electricity from renewable sources for half the year. This places it among the world's top renewable energy systems, following Denmark’s achievement in 2022.

While South Australia’s progress is impressive, the state faces complex challenges in reaching 100% renewables. The IEA report highlights that countries with high shares of renewable energy face significant challenges in grid stability and flexibility. Without timely integration measures, up to 2,000 terawatt-hours of global renewable energy could be at risk by 2030, potentially derailing climate targets.
