Early works have officially begun on the SuperGrid Training Centre and Transmission Hub, marking a significant milestone in Queensland’s energy transition journey. Powerlink is spearheading this project, with the goal of providing vital skills and training for hundreds of workers in the energy sector as the state undergoes a renewable energy transformation.

SuperGrid Transmission Hub Powers Queensland’s Next Phase

Celebrating a New Energy Era in Gladstone

Queensland Minister for Water and Member for Gladstone, Glenn Butcher, joined Powerlink officials at the project site to celebrate the launch of the SuperGrid hub. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to offer critical training and skill development opportunities to support the future workforce as Queensland accelerates its clean energy initiatives.

Energizing Central Queensland’s Industrial Backbone

Powerlink’s Central Queensland network is a key player in the push toward a reliable, renewable energy future. As heavy industries in the region aim to reduce their emissions, Powerlink is investing in strengthening the transmission grid. A new transmission line between Calvale Substation and Calliope River Substation near Gladstone is one of the many projects that will enable the smooth flow of renewable electricity across the state.

Reducing Impact with Thoughtful Planning

The new transmission line will leverage existing easements Powerlink obtained in the 1980s, allowing it to be co-located with the existing infrastructure. This approach reduces the social, environmental, and economic impacts of building new infrastructure, making it a more sustainable solution as Queensland continues its energy evolution.

Building the Workforce for Queensland’s Energy Future

The Gladstone region, long known as an industrial powerhouse, continues to lead in the renewable energy transition. Powerlink is laying the foundation for future growth by establishing a training base in the heart of Central Queensland. The new hub will create hundreds of jobs and offer apprenticeship programs, preparing the next generation of energy workers for the tasks ahead.

A Bright Future for Gladstone

“Gladstone has been an industrial powerhouse for generations, and it will remain so as we transition to renewable energy,” said Minister Butcher. “The establishment of Powerlink’s base here means more jobs, more industry, and new opportunities for local supply chains.”

Training the Next Generation of Energy Workers

Powerlink’s Central Queensland base will host a range of training opportunities, including six new apprenticeship positions in 2024 alone. “This hub will serve as the core training facility for hundreds of energy workers responsible for building and connecting Queensland’s world-class transmission network,” said Powerlink COO Gary Edwards. “We are excited for the future of the region and what it holds.”

Securing a Reliable Network for Future Growth

As industries seek to reduce emissions and transition to electrified operations, Powerlink is committed to ensuring Central Queensland’s grid can meet these demands. Powerlink Executive General Manager of Network and Business Development, Stewart Bell, emphasized the region’s pivotal role in securing a stable and renewable energy future for Queensland.

Driving Queensland’s Clean Energy Revolution

Mick de Brenni, Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, highlighted the importance of the SuperGrid in achieving the state’s renewable energy goals. “The SuperGrid is key to creating 100,000 new jobs in energy generation, green hydrogen, critical minerals mining, and battery manufacturing,” said de Brenni. “What we see happening in this region is driving the clean energy industrial revolution.”
