Chinese solar leader Trina Solar has announced a massive new 400 MW solar + 1,600 MWh battery hybrid project in Western Australia, aiming to serve the region’s rapidly expanding industrial and electrification demands.

🌞 Trina Solar Proposes $700M Solar-Battery Hybrid to Power WA’s Industrial Boom

📍 New Project Set for Killawarra, Near Kadathinni

The Killawarra Solar and Battery Project, valued at $700 million, is planned for a site about 300 km north of Perth, near the town of Kadathinni. It will leverage the north-south 330 kV transmission line passing through the area for efficient power integration.

🏭 Tapping into 1.8 GW of New Industrial Load

Trina Solar revealed its strategic intent behind the project: tapping into 1.8 GW of anticipated new industrial loads expected to emerge nearby in the next few years. The WA government’s energy forecast anticipates up to 50 GW of new capacity may be needed by 2042 due to green industry growth and electrification trends.

🔋 WA Becoming a Battery Storage Powerhouse

Western Australia is rapidly becoming a global hotspot for solar-battery hybrid projects. The Killawarra project follows Trina’s earlier Kemerton BESS, a 660 MW / 2,640 MWh battery expected online in 2026.

Other major WA battery projects include:

  • Neoen’s 560 MW / 2,240 MWh Collie BESS

  • Synergy’s 500 MW / 2,000 MWh CBESS

  • Ace Power’s 150 MW / 600 MWh standalone battery near Pinjarra, currently under public review

☀️ Hybrid Model to Maximize Solar Use

Like WA’s Cunderdin Solar-Battery Hybrid, the Killawarra project will allow solar to be stored directly in the battery, avoiding grid constraints and delivering reliable power during peak demand. This “hybrid connection model” is increasingly critical for industrial zones requiring uninterrupted supply.

📊 Big Batteries Making Big Impact

Battery output in WA recently peaked at 9.4% of total generation, proving that energy storage is already shaping the state’s electricity profile. With industrial electrification accelerating, projects like Killawarra will be vital in bridging daytime solar with evening consumption.
