The Victorian Government has approved its first battery energy storage system (BESS) under a new streamlined renewable energy planning process, aiming to expedite critical storage capacity. The $250 million project, located in Joel Joel, Northern Grampians, is set to become the largest battery in Australia once completed.

Fast-Tracked Approval Process
Victorian Minister for Planning, Sonya Kilkenny, granted approval for the ACEnergy battery project, which was fully processed in just nine weeks under the state's new fast-tracked pathway. The project will connect to the grid via the existing Bulgana Terminal Station and the Bulgana to Ballarat Overhead Powerline.
Supporting Renewable Integration
The battery will store energy and release it during peak demand, aiding the integration of renewable energy into Victoria’s electricity network. This will help stabilize the grid and reduce power prices. The project is a significant step toward Victoria’s energy storage targets of at least 2.6GW by 2030 and 6.3GW by 2035.
Economic and Environmental Impact
With a strong pipeline of renewable projects, Victoria is on track to achieve 95% renewable energy generation by 2035. This transition is expected to generate $9.5 billion in economic development and create 59,000 jobs. Streamlined approval processes are central to meeting these ambitious targets and ensuring a smooth transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Government Commitment
Victorian Ministers Sonya Kilkenny and Lily D’Ambrosio emphasized the importance of accelerating the deployment of renewable energy projects. As the state phases out coal-fired power and faces rising fossil fuel costs, initiatives like the new streamlined approval process are crucial for maintaining reliable and affordable energy.
