Victoria has taken another major step toward its clean energy future by fast-tracking approval for a new large-scale battery project near two recently completed wind farms.

Victoria Fast-Tracks $190M Tarrone Battery to Boost Renewable Energy Storage

🔋 Tarrone Battery Approved:

Spanish energy company GPG has received the green light for its $190 million Tarrone Battery, which will deliver up to 200 MW/400 MWh of storage capacity. It will sit adjacent to the Tarrone substation, already connected to the:

  • ✅ 218 MW Ryan Corner Wind Farm

  • ✅ 97 MW Hawkesdale Wind Farm

  • 🌀 As well as the 400 MW Macarthur Wind Farm

📍 The site is also near a 600 MW gas peaker plant approved in 2010 but currently shelved by AGL.

🌞 Why It Matters:

The battery will store excess renewable energy generated during the day and release it during peak demand, helping:

  • Lower electricity bills

  • Improve energy reliability

  • Accelerate the shift to 95% renewables by 2035

📈 Streamlined Approval Process:

This project is the 16th to be fast-tracked under Victoria’s Development Facilitation Program, avoiding delays of up to two years. The program has unlocked $4.4 billion in renewable investment so far.

🗣️ Only one public objection was received, after consultations with local councils, safety authorities, and stakeholders.

🗨️ Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny said,

“We’re fast-tracking decisions on renewable energy projects like this one to provide cheaper and cleaner energy for more Victorians.”

🗨️ Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio added,

“This Battery Energy Storage System is another way we’re shoring up energy supply and assisting our transition to 95 percent renewable energy by 2035.”
