Western Power is launching a 24-drone fleet as part of an innovative trial to boost WA's energy reliability. These drones aim to enhance monitoring of network faults, reduce pole-top fires, and protect local wildlife—all while helping keep the power flowing smoothly.
Expanding UAV Capabilities
Previously used for inspections and patrols, Western Power’s UAVs will now explore new applications, such as:
Live Insulator Coating: Applying silicone remotely to reduce pole-top fire risks
Enhanced Mapping: Accelerating decision-making with powerline mapping
Wildlife Deterrents: Adding visibility-enhancing attachments to protect wildlife
Speedy Response in Summer
Drones will be vital in summer, offering quicker monitoring than ground patrols and helping reduce outage durations and fire risks.
Complementing a Billion-Dollar Investment
This UAV technology supports Western Power’s $1 billion annual network investment in areas like insulator replacement and vegetation pruning. With a vast, complex network that includes bushfire-prone rural areas, this initiative ensures reliable power across WA.
Leadership in Innovation
Energy Minister Reece Whitby applauded Western Power's approach, stating, “Western Power’s commitment to innovation shows we’re not only meeting today’s demands but actively preparing for tomorrow, ensuring reliable energy for homes and busi
