Australia’s renewable energy sector just caught a serious tailwind. According to Rystad Energy’s latest data, July 2025 was the most powerful month ever for wind generation — both nationally and in several key states.

With wind turbines spinning hard across the country, wind power hit a record-breaking 3.74 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the National Electricity Market (NEM), smashing the previous record of 3.07 TWh set in June 2023.

🌪️ Four States Break Monthly Wind Records

It wasn’t just a national high — four states set their own personal bests for monthly wind energy output:

  • Victoria: 1,516 GWh

  • New South Wales: 858 GWh

  • South Australia: 745 GWh

  • Queensland: 462 GWh

This surge in output is a clear sign that wind is becoming a dominant force in Australia’s energy mix, especially as coal generators continue their phase-out.

☀️ Wind + Solar = 5,177 GWh in July

Add in solar, and the numbers are even more impressive. Total large-scale wind and solar generation hit 5,177 GWh in July 2025 — a 23% jump from July 2024’s 4,221 GWh.

This surge shows that renewables are scaling rapidly, helping meet demand and stabilize the grid as legacy fossil fuel assets wind down.

🏆 Top Wind Farms: WA, NSW, and Victoria Lead the Charge

When it comes to efficiency, WA’s Flat Rocks wind farm topped the leaderboard with a massive 58% capacity factor (CF).Close behind were:

  • Cullerin Range (NSW): 51% CF

  • Woodlawn (NSW): 51% CF

These figures are a sign that smart location and technology investment are paying off for operators and the environment alike.

☀️ Queensland Dominates Solar Rankings

On the solar side, Queensland remains the undisputed champ. The state’s top performers for July included:

  • Moura Solar Farm (Metka): 26% CF

  • Blue Grass Solar (X-Elio): 24% CF

  • Columboola Solar (Hana Financial): 24% CF

In fact, 7 of the top 10 solar assets this month were in Queensland — proving why it’s called the Sunshine State.
