August 2025 delivered a clear signal of Australia’s energy transition: renewables surged, coal slipped, and batteries smashed records across multiple states.

Renewable Momentum
🌞 20% Higher Output – Wind and solar up sharply compared to winter 2024.
🌏 Victoria Leads – 28% rise in renewable generation over last winter.
🔻 Coal Down – Use continues to shrink but fluctuates with demand growth.
📈 Consumption Rising – Energy demand was 3.4% higher than winter 2024.
Record-Breaking Batteries
⚡ WA Takes the Lead – Over 67 GWh battery output in August, 23% above the previous record. Collie Stage 2 (341 MW/1363 MWh) powered WA to new highs.
🔋 Queensland Charging Peak – On 20 Aug, batteries absorbed 2164 MWh, easing solar curtailment.
🔥 NSW Discharge Record – On 25 Aug, NSW batteries discharged 2904 MWh, led by Waratah Super Battery with 2169 MWh alone.
New Projects Moving Ahead
🟢 Bulabul Battery (NSW) – 300 MW/600 MWh Stage 1 underway, with First Nations equity partnership.
🔋 Merredin Battery (WA) – 100 MW/400 MWh project under construction, completion due 2026.
⚡ Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (VIC) – First stage live at 600 MW/1600 MWh, soon to become Victoria’s largest battery system.
Why It Matters
More clean energy reduces reliance on coal and gas.
Batteries are proving essential for balancing demand, storage, and curtailment.
States are racing to host the largest storage hubs in Australia.
