The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $100 million in funding under the Driving the Nation program, targeting the electrification of heavy vehicles. This initiative focuses on three key areas to aid the transition to electric power in the transport sector.
Freight Giants Go Electric with ARENA Funding
ARENA has committed $28.6 million to two landmark projects: Linfox will receive $19.6 million to deploy 26 electric trucks across three states, and Toll will receive $9 million for ‘Project TruckVolt,’ rolling out 28 battery electric trucks across ten sites. Together, these projects unlock over $124 million in investment for freight decarbonization.
Heavy Transport’s Role in Decarbonization
ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasized the importance of decarbonizing the heavy transport sector, which represents a significant portion of Australia’s CO2 emissions. “Transport is poised to become Australia’s largest emissions source by 2030, so it’s vital to electrify where we can have the greatest impact,” Mr. Miller said.
Electric Truck Deployment in Australia
Linfox’s project aims to validate EV performance across long distances and multiple duty cycles in regional and metro areas. Similarly, Toll’s Project TruckVolt will enhance sustainable logistics infrastructure, supporting customers with a greener supply chain.
Driving the Nation Program Expands
The new Driving the Nation focus areas open for applications on 9 November 2024. ARENA is set to host a webinar on 19 November for more information on funding and project support.
