Bold Investments for a Greener Canberra

The ACT Government has unveiled its 2025–26 Budget, spotlighting over $190 million in environmental and climate action initiatives aimed at accelerating the Territory’s transition to a sustainable, net-zero future. The focus? Affordable electrification, community wellbeing, and lasting climate resilience.

ACT 2025–26 Budget Powers Ahead with $190M Clean Energy Push
Electrification at the Core of Net-Zero Goals

Recognising electrification as the most cost-effective path to net-zero, the ACT Government is boosting support for households and businesses to adopt cleaner technologies. The new funding builds on past achievements—like Canberra’s shift to 100% renewable electricity in 2020—and expands efforts to make climate-conscious choices both affordable and accessible.

Major Budget Highlights

$21.776 million over four years to electrify 1,600 public housing properties, replacing gas appliances with efficient electric alternatives.

Continuation of the Electrification of Government Gas Assets program.

$14.989 million for the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme, helping low-income households and small businesses reduce their energy bills.

Expansion of the Sustainable Household Scheme, offering low-interest loans for:

Battery storage

Zero-emissions vehicles and chargers

Energy-efficient electric appliances

Ceiling insulation

Inclusive & Forward-Thinking Programs

Funding will also go to several other initiatives supporting both people and the planet:

Home Energy Efficiency Program

Sustainable Business Program

First Nations Home Energy Support Program

Launch of a Commercial Building Electrification Pilot

TAFE Centre of Excellence for Electric Vehicles, enhancing skills in a growing green job market

$4.14 million to continue implementing the Zero Emissions Vehicles Strategy

Sustaining Climate Leadership

To keep its climate momentum strong, the ACT will also invest $10.863 million in maintaining core climate change and energy functions, helping to ensure that progress continues toward the Territory’s 2045 net-zero emissions target.
