AGL Energy, Australia’s largest coal generator, is making a major pivot. The company says its rapidly growing battery portfolio — both massive grid-scale and smaller projects — will be the big money-maker as the country shifts from coal to renewables and flexible energy.

📈 Batteries: The New Cash Cow
AGL now plans to build 6 GW of new renewable and firming capacity by 2030 (up from 5 GW), and at least half will be batteries. Why?
Batteries can respond to peak demand in seconds.
They earn a 300% premium over the average market price — far more than gas, hydro, wind, or solar.
🚀 Major Projects in the Works
Tomago Battery – 500 MW / 2,000 MWh, due FY28.
Liddell Battery – 500 MW / 1,000 MWh, opening early 2026.
Torrens Island – 250 MW, already operating.
Broken Hill – 50 MW, already operating.
AGL also has deals with other battery sites like Wandoan, Western Downs, and Dalrymple North.
🏭 Coal Closures Coming
Bayswater Coal Plant – closing by 2033.
Loy Yang A – closing by 2035.Coal still makes up over 80% of AGL’s output, but outages and falling reliability are speeding the shift.
💡 What About Wind & Solar?
AGL will still use wind and solar for bulk energy but plans to keep most wind projects “off balance sheet” — meaning others will build them, and AGL will buy the power.
