The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)Ā has launched a groundbreaking report, "Electrifying Road Freight,"Ā setting out the first-ever national planĀ to shift Australia’s heavy freight trucks from diesel to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

Australia’s First National Plan to Electrify Freight Trucks Is Here

šŸ” What the Report Covers

The report, prepared in 2024 by AECOMĀ for ARENA, looks at what Australia needs to do to switch its freight system to electric. It breaks down:

  • ⚔ Energy demand for electric trucks

  • šŸ”Œ Charging infrastructure needs

  • šŸš› Vehicle types and usage patterns

  • šŸ›£ļø Road and grid upgrades

  • šŸ¤ Coordination between governments and industry

šŸ™ļø Urban Freight Is Ready to Go Electric

According to the report, urban freightĀ is the best place to begin this transition. Why?

  • Short driving distances

  • Return-to-base operations (easy charging at depots)

  • Smaller electric trucks already available

This means delivery vans and local freightĀ trucks in cities can start switching to electric right away.

šŸš› Long-Haul Freight Needs More Work

For interstate and regional freight, the challenges are bigger. These trucks need:

  • Stronger transmission and distribution networks

  • Fast chargersĀ along key freight routes

  • Careful phased rolloutĀ of infrastructure across national highways

ARENA recommends setting up 165 heavy vehicle charging hubsĀ around the country—especially near ports, roads, and freight terminals.

🧩 A Whole-of-Government Approach Is Needed

The report stresses that governments must work togetherĀ to ensure smart planning, supportive policies, and consistent regulation. Success will depend on:

  • āš™ļø Integrated national and local planning

  • 🚚 Pilot and demonstration projects

  • šŸŽÆ Clear national targets for freight electrification

šŸ’” ARENA Is Already Backing Pilot Projects

ARENA is putting money into real-world electric truck trials to gather data and boost industry confidence. Projects include:

  • Centurion: $15.8 million to roll out 30 electric trucks and 15 dual-port chargers in Hazelmere, WA

  • Patrick Terminals: $2.5 million to install 9 battery-electric trucks and chargers at WA’s largest container port

  • ANC: $12.8 million to switch 112 delivery trucks to zero-emission vehicles

These trials are part of ARENA’s Driving the NationĀ program to help Australia build hands-on experience in electric freight operations.

šŸ”‹ The Road Ahead: A Clear Path for Cleaner Freight

The report provides a practical roadmapĀ to transition Australia’s road freight sector to clean energy. With smart planning, cross-sector collaboration, and investment in the grid, electric freight can become a reliable, cost-effective, and climate-friendly solution.
