Australia’s recent approval of standards for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology is set to unlock new earning potential for electric vehicle (EV) owners by the end of this year. With this update, owners of V2G-enabled EVs will be able to power their homes, support the grid, and even earn money for doing so. Federal Energy and Climate Minister Chris Bowen recently highlighted the significance of this development, calling it a “battery on wheels” opportunity for consumers.
Let’s dive into what these new regulations mean, how the V2G system works, and how you can start making money with your EV.
1. New Standards Enable EV-to-Home and Grid Integration
Under Australia’s newly approved standards, EVs equipped with V2G technology can now be used to power homes or feed energy back to the grid. Standards Australia’s recent approval allows EVs with bidirectional charging capabilities to connect safely to the grid. For an EV to participate, it must have a bidirectional charging device that meets the revised standards, and the equipment needs to be registered with the Clean Energy Council.
Key Requirements:
Bidirectional Device Certification: Car companies can now apply to have their devices listed and certified.
Local Grid Approval: Distribution networks must confirm compatibility before the devices can be fully operational.
With these standards, EV owners will soon be able to treat their cars as a source of backup energy for home use or to support the grid during peak hours.
2. Earn Income by Selling Energy to the Grid
A significant benefit of V2G is the potential to earn income by selling excess power back to the grid
