Power Outages in Broken Hill Despite Backup Battery and Renewable Assets

Despite boasting a 50 MW big battery, a 200 MW wind farm, and a 53 MW solar farm, Broken Hill is in the dark almost a week after severe storms took down key transmission lines. The backup battery, designed to support power in grid failures, hasn’t kicked in, leaving locals without reliable energy and raising concerns about the resilience of renewable energy infrastructure.

Broken Hill’s Energy Crisis: Why Is the Backup Battery Failing to Keep the Lights On?

Systemic Failures and a Web of Responsibility

With the transmission lines offline, Broken Hill’s diesel generators—meant as a last-resort power source—are struggling. One is broken, and the other faces repeated issues with its fuel pump. Nearby towns have managed with portable generators through “islanding” by Essential Energy, the local network operator, but Broken Hill remains isolated. A maze of ownership only complicates things further: Transgrid operates the transmission network, AGL owns the battery, and Tilt Renewables manages the wind and solar farms.

Why Isn’t the Battery Backing Up the Town?

The battery has been unable to power Broken Hill due to its connection to the transmission network rather than the local distribution network. While AGL’s website indicates the battery should supply local backup during outages, no official statement clarifies why it hasn’t been activated. Industry experts suggest technology delays or regulatory barriers may have stopped the battery from providing its intended support.

Solutions and Steps Forward

Currently, emergency repair crews are working to restore the transmission line by November 6, while residents await reliable long-term solutions like the proposed Hydrostor compressed air facility. The situation has fueled public skepticism about green energy’s reliability, calling for improvements in renewable asset management and response efficiency.
