New England Region Advances Energy Transformation
Work has officially begun on New South Wales’ first large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a major milestone in the state’s clean energy shift.

Key Project Details
🔋 Capacity: 200MW, with a two-hour storage duration
🌞 Location: ACEN Australia’s 720MW New England Solar project
⚡ Purpose: Deliver on-demand energy to NSW & Queensland
Boosting Grid Stability & Security
The 400MWh storage system will feature advanced grid-forming inverters, enhancing:
✔ System strength
✔ Network stability
✔ Security services
This is the first large-scale battery project supported by NSW’s Emerging Energy Program.
Progress & Timeline
🛠 Site preparation & electrical infrastructure: Underway
🏗 Civil & base electrical work: Starting in the next two months
🚚 Battery module delivery: Second half of 2025
🔌 Final commissioning: Mid-2025
A 250MVA transformer (261t) will be trucked in by March 2025, with EPEC managing installation and commissioning.
