Government Support for Energy Efficiency Upgrades
The Federal Government has committed $160 million to Westpac's Sustainable Upgrades Home Loan, aimed at helping Australians make energy-efficiency upgrades to their homes. This initiative is part of the broader effort to ease the cost of living while promoting sustainable energy practices.

Clean Energy Finance Corporation's Role
The funding for this program is provided through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and is part of the $1 billion Household Energy Upgrades Fund (HEUF). This fund is designed to assist more than 110,000 Australian households in lowering their energy bills by making affordable loans available for energy efficiency improvements.
Westpac Sustainable Upgrades Home Loan
Westpac's Sustainable Upgrades home and investor loans will be available to eligible customers who wish to enhance their home's energy efficiency. The loans can be used for installing solar panels, batteries, hot water heat pumps, electric vehicle chargers, double-glazed windows, and insulation.
Ministerial Endorsement of the Initiative
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, highlighted the savings this $160 million commitment would unlock for households. "This innovative collaboration will give Australians more opportunities to benefit from the energy transition and ease cost-of-living pressures," Mr. Bowen said.
Benefits for Older Homes
Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson, emphasized the importance of energy efficiency in reducing costs and emissions. "This investment will help people with older homes and appliances that don’t meet modern energy standards to upgrade and keep money from leaking out the door," Mr. Wilson stated.
Early Commitments and Loan Details
The first commitment from the HEUF was made in May 2024, with $60 million allocated through lender Plenti for cheaper finance on energy efficiency upgrades. The Westpac loans will be available at a competitive variable interest rate of 4.49%.
