A Decade-Long Vision Realised

After more than ten years of planning, coordination, and construction, the Flyers Creek Wind Farm has officially begun delivering clean energy to the grid. The project—now the largest wind farm within the Essential Energy network—is located 20 kilometers south of Orange, nestled in the Blayney and Cabonne LGAs of Central West New South Wales.

Powering the Region with the Wind

Operated by Iberdrola Australia, the wind farm features 38 state-of-the-art turbines and a total capacity of 145 megawatts—enough renewable power to supply around 80,000 homes annually. Essential Energy says the farm isn't just a technical achievement; it’s a beacon of progress for the region’s clean energy future.

Collaboration That Counts

Josh Fitzgerald, the site manager for Iberdrola at Flyers Creek, praised the teamwork with Essential Energy. “It’s been a long road, but a rewarding one. From building the switching station to moving key infrastructure, every part of this project was a group effort,” he said.

Wind Brings Balance to the Grid

Unlike solar farms, which are dependent on daylight, wind energy contributes at different times of day, helping to smooth out the energy supply. Essential Energy’s Darrin Edwards emphasized how vital this is to grid reliability: “We already have a lot of solar, so adding wind power means we get a more balanced and dependable renewable mix.”

Overcoming the Challenges

Bringing the Flyers Creek Wind Farm online wasn’t without its hurdles. From navigating weather delays to coordinating critical network outages, the team faced and solved every challenge with meticulous planning. “It was a balancing act,” Edwards said. “But seeing it connected and operational makes it all worthwhile.”

A Major Step in NSW’s Energy Future

The completion of Flyers Creek marks a significant milestone in NSW’s transition to renewables. Essential Energy is confident that projects like this one will continue to strengthen rural communities, support regional economies, and bring long-term sustainability to the state’s energy system.
