Misleading Claims on Electric vs. Gas Cooktops

The Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) has been found guilty of breaching the Greenwashing Code due to a misleading social media post that claimed electric cooktops are more expensive and emissions-intensive than gas stoves. The ruling was made by the Ad Standards Community Panel on March 5.

Unsubstantiated Environmental Claims

The panel concluded that the post's claims were misleading, exaggerated, and unverifiable by the average person. The complaint, filed by the Environment Defenders Office on behalf of CommsDeclare, argued that the post ignored methane emissions, omitted renewable energy sources, and failed to address health risks associated with burning gas.

Methane's Climate Impact

Methane, a primary component of natural gas, is 86 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Despite this, AGIG attempted to justify its claims without considering methane’s impact or renewable alternatives.

Context of the Controversy

Belinda Noble, founder of CommsDeclare, highlighted that the ad was part of a larger campaign aimed at resisting the Victorian Government's phaseout of gas in homes. Noble stated that the ruling sends a clear message to advertisers to avoid misleading "creative emissions accounting."

Industry Response

Though AGIG stood by its advertisement, they agreed to take it down following the panel's decision. The Ad Standards panel did not address health risks, focusing solely on the environmental claims.
