A Major Milestone for Renewable Energy
Western Australia has taken a bold step in its renewable energy journey with the launch of its first-ever hybrid solar PV and battery project. The Cunderdin Hybrid PV Solar and BESS project is now operational, designed to supply four hours of steady power even when the sun isn’t shining, boosting the state’s clean energy capacity.

Powering Thousands of Homes
This ambitious project by Global Power Generation (GPG) will generate enough energy to power approximately 51,000 households and prevent the release of 140,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. With 229,500 solar panels delivering a PV capacity of 128MW and a 55MW/220MWh battery storage, it ensures a consistent energy supply during peak demand.
A Trailblazing Project
The Cunderdin project is the first of its kind in the region, setting new standards for large-scale hybrid solar and battery systems in Western Australia. After rigorous testing over three months, the facility has now begun full operations, marking GPG’s expansion into the South Western Interconnected System (SWIS).
Community and Industry Collaboration
The opening ceremony was graced by key leaders, including Jai Thomas from the Department of Energy, Western Power CEO Sam Barbaro, and GPG executives. Monford Group, the main EPC contractor, handled all construction phases, creating around 100 full-time jobs.
Leadership Voices
Mr. Thomas praised the state’s energy reforms for enabling such innovative projects, while Mr. Barbaro highlighted the teamwork between stakeholders, calling the project a vital step toward net zero.
Monford Group CEO, Mr. Shannon, expressed gratitude to GPG and the local community for their support, emphasizing Monford's commitment to Australia's energy future.
GPG CEO Mr. Bustío celebrated the project's success, noting it as a "global benchmark" for renewable energy and a symbol of their dedication to sustainability and community development.
Towards a Greener Future
The Cunderdin Hybrid Solar Project is not just a technological achievement—it’s a statement of Western Australia’s commitment to cleaner energy and economic growth through sustainable practices. Projects like these are lighting the path towards a greener, more resilient energy future.
