Origin Energy has approved the third stage of the Eraring Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), set to make it one of the largest battery systems in the Southern Hemisphere.
Key Features of the Expansion
Third Stage Addition: 700MWh, enhancing dispatch duration to four hours.
Combined Capacity: 700MW/2800MWh across three stages, positioning it among the largest BESS globally.
Massive Scale: The site spans over 17 hectares, equivalent to 24 soccer fields, with over 2000 battery enclosures and 180km of cabling.
Supporting the Energy Transition
Origin’s Head of Energy Supply, Greg Jarvis, highlighted the project’s role in stabilizing the grid and firming variable wind and solar supply. Once operational, the battery will dispatch enough energy to power 150,000 NSW households annually.
Investment and Timeline
Investment: $1.7 billion committed to storage projects, including Mortlake Power Station in Victoria and Queensland’s 500MW Supernode battery.
Timeline:
Stage one and three: Online by end-2025.
