Project Under Scrutiny

A 250 MW / 1,100 MWh Yanco battery project in south-western NSW, proposed by Acenergy, has been referred to the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) after receiving 63 objections. Despite its location next to an existing substation, transmission lines, a rail line, and only 200 metres from a sewerage plant, the project must undergo IPC review because it crossed the 50-objection threshold.

Who Objected?

  • 58 of 63 objections came from outside a 100 km radius.

  • Nearly one-third came from interstate individuals or groups.

  • No objections were lodged within five kilometres of the site.

  • Submissions cited sources ranging from Murdoch media to climate denial groups.

Nature of Concerns

  • Many objections included climate denial, misinformation, and conspiracy theories.

  • Claims ranged from “fake green swindles” to fears of EV fires, blackouts, and animal impacts.

  • Some submissions backed coal, nuclear, and small modular reactors instead of batteries.

Planning Department View

The NSW Department of Planning has recommended approval, stating:

  • Local interest or concern is very low.

  • Impacts are considered minimal.

  • Conditions can adequately manage risks.

What’s Next

The IPC will hold a public meeting in Leeton on September 15 and seek further submissions before making a final determination.
