The Federal Government has opened two new Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tenders, unlocking billions in renewable energy projects that will power Western Australia into a cleaner, more reliable future.

New CIS tenders open in Western Australia: $4B clean energy boost with solar farms, wind turbines and battery storage, targeting 1.6 GW capacity.

💰 Investment and Impact

  • Estimated $4 billion in private investment for WA’s Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM)

  • Adds 1.6 GW of renewable generation

  • Backed by 2.4 GWh of dispatchable storage

  • Enough energy to power 900,000+ households annually

  • Storage capacity to cover 550,000 households for four hours

🔑 Why it matters

The tenders will help secure WA’s energy grid as the state prepares to exit coal-fired generation by 2030. Together, these projects will contribute to:

  • At least 2.3 GW of new renewable generation

  • 4.4 GWh of clean dispatchable storage

  • More grid stability, cheaper energy, and stronger community benefits

📅 Tender details

  • Developers have 10 weeks to submit bids

  • Bidding closes 7 November 2025

  • Assessed on:

    • Project deliverability & value for money

    • Contribution to grid reliability

    • First Nations engagement

    • Shared benefits & local content commitments

🌱 A step toward 2030 goals

The CIS is central to the government’s plan to deliver 82% renewables by 2030, with 40 GW of new clean capacity nationally.

So far, 19 CIS projects have already been announced, representing 5.85 GW of capacity and $15 billion in community, jobs, and First Nations benefits.

🗣️ Leaders speak

  • Chris Bowen: “Investors are competing to deliver more renewable energy for WA this decade.”

  • Josh Wilson: “WA households have embraced solar – now CIS projects will strengthen our grid as coal exits.”

  • Amber-Jade Sanderson: “This tender gives investors confidence and backs WA’s clean energy future.”
