Perth-based Altech Batteries has achieved a significant milestone by successfully activating a 60-kilowatt (kW) sodium-chloride solid-state battery prototype in Germany. The battery, named Cerenergy ABS60, was installed at its joint venture partner Fraunhofer IKTS’ test laboratory in Dresden and is now undergoing trials under real-world conditions.

A Game-Changer in Battery Tech
The Cerenergy ABS60 battery stands out because it uses common table salt and doesn’t require lithium, copper, cobalt, graphite, or manganese. According to Altech CEO Iggy Tan, the battery can operate in a wide range of temperatures and has a lifespan of 15 years—twice that of traditional lithium-ion batteries.
“This demonstration provides critical data for our off-take parties, helping us move toward constructing our first 120MWh plant,” said Tan. The company already has a Letter of Intent for 30MWh of off-take with Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park.
Promising Test Results
The testing phase, which included 497 individual battery cells, saw the battery run at 300°C. After 500 cycles, the cells maintained an 80 Ah discharge capacity and up to 91% efficiency, without any signs of degradation. Stress tests further confirmed the battery's durability, as the cells showed no failures even under overcharge conditions.
The Sodium-Ion Alternative
Sodium-ion batteries, such as the Cerenergy ABS60, are gaining traction as a credible alternative to lithium-ion technology. Sodium is cheaper, easier to source, and holds its charge longer than lithium. However, sodium-ion batteries are less energy-dense, requiring more space and materials for the same charge storage.
Future of Solid-State Technology
Solid-state batteries, like the ABS60, promise lighter, faster-charging, and safer alternatives to liquid electrolyte batteries. Although they face challenges, breakthroughs in sodium-based solid-state technology could pave the way for cheaper and safer energy storage solutions.
