Two Giants, One Bold Vision

In a major move toward cleaner energy, EnergyAustralia has teamed up with EDF Power Solutions Australia to breathe life into the Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (LLPHES) project in Lithgow, NSW. This dynamic duo plans to co-develop and deliver a hydro project that could redefine renewable energy storage in the region.

Powerful Pairing: New Partnership Ignites Lake Lyell Hydro Project
Why EDF? Because Experience Counts

After a competitive selection process, EDF stood out for its global track record in operating pumped hydro assets. With years of expertise and 20GW of hydro power under its belt worldwide, EDF brings heavyweight knowledge to this local landmark project.

385MW of Clean, Reliable Energy

Once completed, LLPHES will be able to pump out 385 megawatts of steady, on-demand energy—enough to light up over 250,000 homes for eight hours straight. It’s not just a power project—it’s a resilience booster for NSW’s energy grid.

Storage that Supports Solar and Wind

EnergyAustralia’s Managing Director, Mark Collette, called the project a key pillar in Australia’s clean energy transformation. “This isn’t just storage—it’s the glue that holds renewable power together,” he said, noting that pumped hydro is crucial to stabilizing the supply from solar and wind sources.

Local Roots, Global Reach

EnergyAustralia brings long-standing ties with the Lithgow community, while EDF adds its global engineering muscle. The partnership is designed to balance cutting-edge development with local care and collaboration.

EDF’s Vision for the Future

EDF Power Solutions Australia’s CEO, James Katsikas, said the company is eager to bring its international know-how into the Australian fold. Already leading the Dungowan PHES near Tamworth, EDF sees Lake Lyell as another opportunity to help Australia build a cleaner, more secure energy future.

What’s Next for LLPHES?

The joint venture now owns 100% of the LLPHES project, with EDF holding a 75% equity stake. EnergyAustralia retains power purchase rights and continues leading community engagement. The project is on track for its environmental impact statement in 2025, with a final investment decision expected by late 2026.
