Opening the Door to a Greener Future

EnergyCo has officially launched the next phase of the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) by inviting expressions of interest (EOIs) for a network operator. This marks a crucial step forward in connecting the state’s biggest clean energy zone with homes and businesses across New South Wales.

The Role of the Future Operator

The chosen network operator will be tasked with designing, building, financing, operating, and maintaining new high-voltage transmission lines and infrastructure, including energy hubs. These systems will channel solar and wind energy from the REZ into the state's power grid.

A Statewide Energy Upgrade

EnergyCo CEO Hannah McCaughey called it a “milestone moment,” not only for the New England REZ but also for NSW’s broader renewable energy transformation. “This is about putting the right infrastructure in the right places to build a reliable, clean energy system that supports our future,” she explained.

Stronger Communities Through Clean Energy

The project is set to inject investment into regional communities, creating around 6,000 construction jobs. EnergyCo is seeking an operator who will boost local employment, build skills, and use regional supply chains, helping communities thrive during and after construction.

Surging Interest in the Project

After a call for registrations in March 2025, EnergyCo reported strong industry interest, advancing 19 candidates to the EOI phase. Project Director Doug Parris noted, “The strong market response shows how much momentum there is to make this project a reality.”

Partnering with the People

Beyond technical ability, the future network operator must also demonstrate a commitment to meaningful engagement with local councils, landowners, and First Nations communities. Long-term partnerships with these groups will be key to the project's lasting success.

Next Steps in the Selection Process

The EOI stage will remain open until 25 June 2025. After that, shortlisted applicants will be announced in the third quarter of 2025, moving one step closer to launching this landmark renewable energy project.
