The Western Australian Government is taking major strides in building the state’s clean energy future by investing $25 million in local manufacturing through its 2025–26 budget. The aim? To ensure the poles and wires essential to the energy transition are made right here in WA, creating jobs and cutting emissions at the same time.

Powering WA's Future: A Boost for Local Energy Manufacturing
New Manufacturing Facility to Lead the Charge

As part of its Made in WA initiative, the government is allocating $10 million to establish a brand-new transmission component manufacturing facility in Forrestfield. This facility will supply Western Power with the thousands of kilometres of transmission lines needed to deliver a cleaner and more reliable energy system.

Partnering With Industry for Smart Local Solutions

The project won’t go it alone. The state plans to collaborate with established steel fabrication companies to shape the facility and its capabilities. In parallel, another major hub is being planned in Picton, where Western Power will become a foundational customer of a new Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Hub (AMTECH).

Investment in Regional Growth and Infrastructure

Planning for these manufacturing centres will receive $5 million through the Strategic Industries Fund. The goal is to secure a long-term local production base for energy infrastructure while supporting regional job growth and sustainable development.

Maximising Local Content in Every Step

Another $10 million will go toward a new Local Industry Development Fund. This initiative will help Western Power and other government partners achieve high levels of local content in their supply chains. A dedicated coordination group will also be established to streamline local procurement and ensure WA businesses benefit from every opportunity.

A Vision for Jobs, Growth, and Decarbonisation

Premier Roger Cook highlighted the importance of this investment: “By building what we need here in WA, we’re not just creating jobs—we’re laying the foundation for an energy system that’s local, clean, and secure. This is how we keep WA’s economy strong and sustainable.”

Strong Support from State Leaders

Treasurer Rita Saffioti pointed out that this builds on the state’s proud track record of local manufacturing, including the return of railcar production to WA through METRONET. Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson added that the initiative would foster long-term supplier partnerships and help diversify WA’s economy by strengthening its manufacturing sector.
