The Queensland Government is making strides in emissions reduction by investing in Kestrel Coal Resources’ innovative coal mine waste gas-to-electricity project. This initiative is part of the $520 million Low Emissions Investment Partnerships (LEIP) program, aimed at transforming high-emission industries.

Qld Government Powers Up Waste Gas-to-Energy with New Investment

Capturing Fugitive Gas for Cleaner Energy

The project focuses on expanding Kestrel mine’s drainage system to capture fugitive gas, a harmful greenhouse gas, before it is released into the atmosphere. This proactive approach is expected to reduce emissions by over one million tonnes over the next eight years.

Powering Homes with Waste Gas

A 30MW power station, to be constructed at the Kestrel mine, north of Emerald, will generate electricity using the captured waste gas. This facility will produce enough power to meet the energy needs of more than 40,000 homes, showcasing how waste can be turned into a valuable energy source.

Fast-Tracking Emissions Reduction with LEIP

Kestrel Coal Resources is the second private-sector partner in the Queensland Government's LEIP program, which accelerates emissions reduction projects across the state’s highest-emitting facilities. The project promises to deliver significant environmental benefits while fostering economic growth.

Job Creation and Regional Development

In addition to cutting emissions, the project will create around 160 new jobs, supplementing Kestrel’s existing workforce of 700. Full operations are expected to begin by 2026, marking a milestone for both emissions reduction and regional job creation.

Essential for Net Zero and Renewable Energy Growth

Deputy Premier Cameron Dick emphasized the crucial role of Queensland’s metallurgical coal industry in forging the steel needed for renewable energy infrastructure. He highlighted that projects like this align with the state’s mission to transition to net-zero emissions while maintaining economic stability.

Industry Commitment to Decarbonization

Kestrel Coal Resources’ CEO, Shane Hansen, praised the funding as a catalyst for the company’s decarbonization strategy, noting that the partnership with Queensland Treasury and LEIP is critical for the future of the workforce and sustainable steelmaking.
