Remote households across Western Australia’s Kimberley region are starting to see real savings, as the Kimberley Communities Solar Saver (KCSS) program powers up a brighter and more affordable future.

💡 300 Rooftop Solar Systems Set to Save Residents $450 a Year

Jointly funded by the Federal and WA Governments, the KCSS program will install up to 300 rooftop solar systems across five remote communities, delivering a combined 2MW capacity.

Approximately 430 households are set to benefit from average savings of $450 annually on energy bills—easing pressure in areas where diesel generation has long been the default.

🌄 Warmun and Bidyadanga Already Reaping Solar Benefits

So far, the impact is tangible:

Warmun: 422kW of rooftop solar installed→ $30,000 in energy saving credits distributed to 78 homes since August 2024
Bidyadanga: 356.4kW installed across 33 properties→ 133 households shared $33,000 in bill credits by April 2025

Both communities are now less dependent on expensive and polluting diesel for their energy needs.

🛠️ Ardyaloon Next in Line for Solar Transformation

Work is already underway in Ardyaloon, with 21 homes receiving rooftop systems. Once completed, 85 households will enjoy the clean energy benefits of solar through a shared community model.

🤝 A Just Transition for All Australians

This program is part of a $19.9 million investment ($12.6M from WA and $7.3M from the Federal Government) under the Community Solar Banks initiative. It aims to bring equity in energy access by empowering remote and underserved communities to join the clean energy transition.

“This is what a fairer energy system looks like,” said Climate Minister Chris Bowen, “shared solar, cutting bills, easing cost-of-living pressures, and reducing reliance on expensive diesel.”

WA’s Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson echoed this sentiment, calling the initiative “a rooftop solar farm with equal distribution of benefits.”
