South Australia is leading Australia's charge toward 100% net renewable energy. This trailblazing state, having phased out coal in 2016 and decreasing its reliance on gas, is close to achieving a world-first energy milestone—reaching 100% net renewable energy entirely from wind and solar.

The Push for Renewables
The key to this transition is a new transmission link to New South Wales, set to be completed within two years. Once operational, it will further minimize gas usage and enable South Australia to be the first large-scale grid powered predominantly by wind and solar. With no hydro energy and geothermal attempts proving unsuccessful, the state has leaned heavily on these renewable resources.
Renewables and the Economy
Contrary to critics' fears, South Australia’s renewable energy push has not hurt the economy. In fact, industries are booming, with many companies setting up shop to take advantage of clean power and reduced costs. Even major players like BHP plan to expand their production at the Olympic Dam mine due to the affordable, renewable energy available.
A State Powered by Wind and Solar
Data shows that over the last year, wind and solar energy accounted for more than 70% of South Australia's electricity demand, with recent weeks reaching as high as 105%. The government estimates that 75% of the state’s electricity is now derived from renewables, making it a global leader.
Rooftop Solar and Grid Adaptation
South Australia also leads the country in rooftop solar installations. While this presents challenges for grid operators—who prefer controlled energy sources—new inverter standards and grid protocols are being introduced to manage this influx of solar power.
The Role of Batteries in the Transition
The installation of the Tesla Big Battery at Hornsdale in 2017 put South Australia on the map for grid-scale energy storage. The state is now home to four operating big batteries, with more under construction, including the Blyth and Templers batteries. This growing storage capacity is crucial for managing excess renewable energy, ensuring a reliable power supply.
Federal Support for the Transition
To further bolster the renewable transition, South Australia and Victoria have been selected for the federal Capacity Investment Scheme. This initiative will underwrite wind, solar, and storage projects, accelerating the push towards 82% renewables across Australia’s grid by 2030.
The Future of South Australia’s Energy
With several large-scale battery projects underway, South Australia is on track to expand its renewable energy storage to over 3,200 MWh. These projects, alongside new renewable developments like the 412 MW Goyder South wind farm, will ensure that the state meets its ambitious energy goals.
