Big Step Forward for Bell Bay Green Hydrogen Hub

Tasmania is making bold strides toward its clean energy future with the announcement of a provisional partner for the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub. After a competitive expressions of interest process, Bell Bay Power Fuels has been selected to help develop the state’s flagship green hydrogen project.

A Hub with Global Potential

The proposed facility could produce up to 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually—enough to fuel over 2,200 heavy-duty trucks for a full year. The development isn’t just about clean energy; it’s expected to create around 740 direct and indirect jobs, ranging from engineers and energy experts to tradespeople like concreters, electricians, and fitters.

Government Backs the Hydrogen Vision

Nick Duigan, Tasmania’s Minister for Energy and Renewables, praised the high quality of the submissions and said the strong interest reflects confidence in Tasmania’s clean energy vision. The 2025–26 Budget allocates $64.8 million over four years for strategic renewable energy projects, showing the government’s deep commitment to a low-emissions economy.

Why Tasmania is Positioned to Lead

As Australia’s renewable energy frontrunner, Tasmania offers natural advantages like abundant wind and hydropower. Initiatives such as the $14.4 million Renewable Energy Approvals Pathway and the emerging Renewable Energy Services Hub are part of a wider effort to create clean fuel industries, drive investment, and fuel regional growth.

Part of a Bigger Plan for a Cleaner Future

The Hydrogen Hub is a cornerstone of Tasmania’s broader energy strategy, which is designed to deliver cleaner energy, attract long-term investment, and support regional economic resilience. The plan feeds into the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, which aims to position the state as a global leader in renewables.
