Victoria’s energy transition in the Latrobe Valley is gathering pace, with Flow Power reaching financial close on its first large-scale standalone battery, backed by majority shareholder OPTrust.

The project will deliver a 100 MW Bennetts Creek Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near the site of the former Hazelwood coal-fired power station — a powerful symbol of the region’s shift from coal to clean energy.

🔋 Victoria’s Latrobe Valley to Welcome New Big Battery Near Hazelwood Site

⚡ Bennetts Creek BESS: Project Highlights

  • 🔋 Capacity: 100 MW

  • 📍 Location: Latrobe Valley, Victoria (near Hazelwood)

  • 🛠️ Battery technology & controls: Wärtsilä

  • 🏗️ Construction & commissioning: Zenviron

  • 🗓️ Expected completion: 2028

This is Flow Power’s 11th generation project, and its first grid-scale standalone battery in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

🔄 From Coal Legacy to Grid Support

The Bennetts Creek BESS will play a critical role in:

  • Firming renewable energy during peak demand

  • Strengthening grid reliability in Victoria

  • Supporting the replacement of ageing coal generation

Flow Power says the project strengthens its growing portfolio and allows it to deliver more firmed renewable energy products to homes and businesses across the NEM.

🏠 Turning Customers into Grid Participants

What sets this project apart is how directly it links large-scale storage to retail innovation.

Bennetts Creek underpins Flow Power’s residential product, Flow Home, Australia’s first tech-integrated electricity plan, launched in November 2024.

Key features include:

  • ⚡ Up to 45c/kWh feed-in tariff

  • ⏰ Applies during 5:30pm–7:30pm, when electricity is most valuable

  • 🔋 Backed by Bennetts Creek and Flow Power’s wider renewable portfolio

The idea is simple: reward households for exporting energy when the grid needs it most.

🧠 A New Role for Energy Consumers

Flow Power founder and CEO Matthew van der Linden says Australia’s energy future depends on active participation.

By 2050, the NEM will need to double generation capacity as coal exits — much of it coming from rooftops, batteries, and smart energy systems.

Flow Power’s strategy rests on two pillars:

  1. Technology – smart tools today, AI and automation next

  2. Price signals – flexible pricing that lets consumers benefit from low-cost energy and avoid high prices

In short, homes and businesses are becoming mini power stations, not just passive bill-payers.

🌱 Big Picture

Bennetts Creek is more than just another battery:

  • It reinforces Latrobe Valley’s role in a clean-energy future

  • It shows how grid-scale storage + retail innovation can work together

  • It highlights how batteries are replacing coal as the backbone of reliability
