A Major Boost for Green Hydrogen
The Murchison Green Hydrogen Project has secured $814 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), becoming the first recipient under the Hydrogen Headstart Program. This milestone aims to produce 900,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually in its initial phase—almost half of Australia’s current ammonia production from fossil fuels.

Green Ammonia's Role
Green ammonia, derived from solar and wind-powered hydrogen, has versatile applications, from fertilizers to powering ships as a green fuel. ARENA’s CEO, Darren Miller, emphasized that this investment bridges the gap between the market price for renewable hydrogen and production costs, advancing Australia's decarbonization efforts.
Unlocking Economic Potential
According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), the Australian hydrogen industry could unlock $50 billion in private investments and create up to 16,000 jobs by 2030. Federal Minister Chris Bowen highlighted that this support could position Australia as a leader in the renewable energy sector.
Murchison Project Details
Developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), the project will operate off-grid, utilizing 1.2 GW of solar PV, 1.7 GW of onshore wind, and a 600 MW/1200 MWh battery storage system. The green hydrogen will be converted to ammonia for export, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
Future Prospects
Before receiving funds, the project must fulfill various development conditions and achieve commercial operations. The funding will be based on production volumes over a decade, ensuring tangible results.
