AGL’s Customer Council has issued an open letter urging governments, regulators, networks, and retailers to prioritize consumers amid Australia’s renewable energy transition.

AGL: Centering Consumers in Australia’s Energy Transition

The Call for a People-Focused Energy Shift

AGL emphasized that equity, fairness, and affordability must underpin the rapid shift to renewable energy and the integration of consumer energy resources (CER). With energy affordability a pressing concern, the letter highlights the transformative potential of new technologies but stresses the need for empowering and protecting consumers to ensure they benefit from the evolving energy system.

Key Short-Term Actions
  1. Build Consumer Trust:

    • Enhance customer support systems nationwide.

    • Standardize assistance for vulnerable customers to provide timely relief.

  2. Fast-Track Smart Meters:

    • Accelerate deployment to unlock benefits for vulnerable customers.

    • Improve communication to address concerns like tariff reassignment impacts.

  3. Support Businesses:

    • Offer long-term energy upgrade incentives.

    • Conduct public trials to identify barriers to decarbonization and cost savings.

  4. Improve Communication Across Industries:

    • Strengthen consumer trust with clear, transparent messaging.

Recommendations from 2023 Progress Report

1. Harmonize State Concessions Schemes:While bill relief initiatives are improving, a unified framework is needed to identify and support struggling customers more effectively.

2. Advance Smart Meter Rollout:The accelerated deployment of smart meters is underway, but better communication and safeguards are needed to maximize their benefits, especially for vulnerable groups.

3. Boost Energy Upgrades for Businesses:Policies like bonus tax deductions for energy-efficient upgrades must be scaled up, with clearer communication of support opportunities and barriers addressed through trials.

Collaborative Consumer-Centric Solutions

The AGL Customer Council urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure new technologies, pricing structures, and protections are fair and accessible. This includes setting regulated tariff structures and pricing principles that amplify consumer agency and prioritize those most in need.

A Vision for an Inclusive Energy Future

AGL’s call to action underscores the importance of collaboration and innovation to achieve a just and equitable energy transition. By centering consumers, particularly the vulnerable, Australia can build a sustainable and inclusive energy system.
