Hydrogen Strategy Aims for Global Leadership
The Federal Government has launched a National Hydrogen Strategy to position Australia as a global leader in hydrogen production, usage, and export. The strategy outlines four objectives, supported by 34 actions, and is central to Australia’s renewable energy vision.

Major Programs to Boost Green Hydrogen Production
Key components include the Green Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive and the Green Hydrogen Headstart Program, funded by $8 billion from the 2024–25 Federal Budget. These initiatives aim to unlock $50 billion in private investments and boost Australia’s annual green hydrogen production to over one million tonnes by 2030, with long-term goals of reaching 15 million tonnes by 2050.
Australia’s Hydrogen Potential
The strategy notes that Australia already accounts for 20% of global hydrogen projects, with a project pipeline valued at over $200 billion. Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, emphasized that scaling Australia’s hydrogen industry will bolster the economy and help the country achieve its net-zero targets.
International Hydrogen Collaboration with Germany
The launch coincided with a report by UNSW Sydney, exploring the feasibility of a hydrogen and green metals partnership between Australia and Germany. This collaboration aims to create a sustainable value chain for green steel, leveraging Australia’s renewable energy and mineral resources alongside Germany’s advanced industrial technologies.
Green Hydrogen as Australia’s Renewable Future
With this strategy, Australia is set to become a renewable energy superpower, supporting global decarbonization efforts and securing its position in the international hydrogen market.
