The City of Port Adelaide Enfield (City of PAE) has successfully completed the first stage of its ambitious streetlight upgrade project, with over 4,812 streetlights now converted to energy-efficient LED bulbs. This significant achievement marks the completion of stage one of the council’s bulk LED rollout, which began in December 2023 in partnership with SA Power Networks. The $2.46 million initiative focused on replacing traditional lights with LED bulbs on Stobie pole-mounted lights across residential streets, meeting its target by the end of the 2023–24 financial year.
A Greener Future with LED Technology
SA Power Networks reports that currently, around half of South Australia’s streetlights are powered by energy-efficient LED technology. This transition is part of the utility's broader commitment to fostering a greener and more cost-effective future for energy users across the state. City of PAE Mayor, Claire Boan, expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s completion, highlighting the dual benefits of reduced power bills and enhanced lighting for the community. “The new LED lights have not only cut our energy costs but have also improved safety and the overall look of our streets,” said Mayor Boan.
The Benefits of LED Streetlights
LED lights offer several advantages over traditional streetlights. They are up to 82 percent more energy-efficient, reducing light pollution and minimizing light spill into residential properties. The improved design of LED lights ensures that light is spread more evenly across roads and footpaths, making objects appear more natural. Additionally, these lights require less maintenance, which lowers operating costs and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to their traditional counterparts.
Financial and Environmental Impact
Although energy costs for streetlights have risen substantially over the past year, th
