Global Leadership in Renewable Energy

With a reputation for leading renewable energy initiatives and investing heavily in hydrogen, South Australia believes it is an ideal candidate to host COP31. The state’s efforts have positioned it as a frontrunner in climate action, making it a logical choice for this prestigious global event.

Backing from the Federal Government

While the Federal Government has been pursuing hosting rights for COP31, the South Australian Government saw an opportunity to propose Adelaide as the host city. Upon commissioning a feasibility study, it was confirmed that Adelaide has the necessary infrastructure and capabilities to accommodate such a large-scale event.

Adelaide: Ready for COP31

In-depth analyses of accommodation, transport, and security have reassured the government that Adelaide is more than prepared to host COP31. The event would likely take place at the Adelaide Convention Centre, which would be transformed into a secure zone with public event areas.

Economic Benefits for South Australia

Hosting COP31 is projected to bring $511.6 million to South Australia through tourism, trade, and investment. Additionally, the event would enhance the state’s global brand, strengthening its reputation as a leader in renewable energy.

Support from SA Business Chamber

The SA Business Chamber, a key advocate for the bid, highlighted the state's proven track record in hosting international events. Chief Executive Andrew Kay said, "Our leadership in renewables makes us the perfect host, and COP would further solidify our standing as a global green leader."

Pioneering Renewable Energy

South Australia’s commitment to decarbonization is unmatched. Currently, 75% of its energy comes from renewable sources, with a goal of reaching 100% by 2027. The state is also home to the Hornsdale Power Reserve and the upcoming Whyalla hydrogen power project, further showcasing its innovative approach to energy.

Premier's Vision for a Global Stage

South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, expressed his enthusiasm for the bid, emphasizing how hosting COP31 would put South Australia on the global stage. "We are already leading in renewable energy and hosting this conference would cement our place as a world leader in climate action," he said.

A Legacy of Climate Action

South Australia was the first state in Australia to declare a climate emergency, and member for Port Adelaide, Susan Close, noted the state's continued leadership. "Hosting COP31 would give us the platform to show the world how South Australia is addressing climate change and transitioning to a net-zero economy," Close said.
