New Record Set
South Australia has broken a major renewable milestone.
Wind energy supplied 147.3% of the state’s electricity demand at 4:20am on Saturday.
This beat the previous record of 146.5% set back in 2022.

Why It Happened
Two key changes made this possible:
✅ New NSW Link – Stage 1 of Project EnergyConnect opened, adding 150 MW export capacity.
✅ Relaxed Gas Rules – Grid now requires only one gas generator online, not two.
At the time of the record:
SA was exporting 720 MW of power.
Wind output was over 2,000 MW.
Only 40 MW of gas was running in the background.
What’s Next
The rest of Project EnergyConnect will allow even more exports.
Synchronous condensers + advanced batteries will replace gas for system strength.
Eight new large-scale batteries are on the way to store extra wind and solar.
World-Leading Target
SA already gets 75% of its power from renewables.
By 2027, it aims for 100% net renewables – making it the first major grid in the world to achieve this.
