Powering Thousands of Homes with Clean Energy

A brand-new solar farm in Bothwell, about 76km north of Hobart, has been officially approved by the Federal Government. Once operational, the 250MW Weasel Solar Farm will generate enough electricity to power around 30,000 Tasmanian homes, making it a significant contributor to the state’s renewable energy push.

Green Tech Meets Smart Storage

The project doesn’t just stop at solar panels. It also includes a 144MW/576MWh battery storage system, ensuring power is stored and ready when needed. With around 4000 solar panels planned, the farm will feed into the National Electricity Market through Tasmania’s proposed Midlands Renewable Energy Zone.

Big Win for the Environment

Environmentally, the project is expected to make a real impact — cutting down over 44,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, which is like planting more than 450,000 trees annually. The solar farm will be built on cleared agricultural land, and its design even allows for sheep grazing beneath the panels, blending agriculture with clean energy.

Job Boost for the Region

This solar development isn’t just good for the planet — it’s great for local employment too. The construction phase will create up to 300 direct jobs, with around 20 ongoing roles in operations, maintenance, and management.

Government Fast-Tracking Renewable Progress

The approvals process took just 20 days, highlighting the government's commitment to accelerating clean energy. Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt praised the project, calling it a “perfect example” of agriculture and renewables working hand in hand.

A Bright Outlook for Tasmania

Local MP Rebecca White called it a win for the region, stating, “These projects bring real investment, job security, and reaffirm Tasmania’s place as a renewable energy leader.”
